Today’s Reason To Drink

Simple and fresh.

Today is National Margarita Day! Do you know where your pants are?

I like margaritas, but sometimes the shitty ones give me heartburn.

What makes a margarita shitty? Pre-made sour mix, of course. But a bar that makes it with fresh ingredients — real lime juice, mainly — is a solid establishment.

We’re lucky to have many bars here in Louisville that make solid margaritas. Off the top of my head, there’s El Mundo, Wild Rita’s, Galaxie, Dragon King’s Daughter … and so on and so forth.

Did you know there’s a bar in New York City making America’s most expensive margarita? I don’t want any part of that, unless they’re handing out free samples. But at Selena Rosa Restaurant, you can get the “Silk Stocking Margarita” for a mere $2,500.

No thanks. Among its ingredients are Clase Azul Ultra Anejo Tequila, Mexican salts, a fresh-cut lime and a spiral-cut jalapeño. I guess that spiral cut is worth at least $500?

Fun fact: It’s estimated that about 185,000 margaritas are consumed an hour in America.

That’s a lot of heartburn.
