Once these are gone, they’re gone forever.

There are a handful of bars and restaurants in town that select their own barrel of bourbon to sell strictly at their establishments. It gives their patrons an opportunity to try a one-of-a-kind bourbon that was hand picked by the staff. And once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.

21c Museum Hotel has a selection of their own Proof on Main-selected bourbons and other spirits, but what’s different about them is you can not only have a drink of what you like, you can then buy the bottle from the gift shop and take it home.

(Haymarket Whiskey Bar also sometimes sells their private selections, because they have a package license permit.)

Anyway, Proof’s very cool beverage director Chea Beckley invited me over to sample some of their latest selections, and all were quite tasty. I ended up buying a bottle of the Buffalo Trace, which is the only way you can purchase that bourbon as a single barrel.
