Sit at a piano more often, girl!

So I got the new Taylor Swift CD over the holiday weekend, and I have some thoughts about it. But first …

I actually bought a real live CD — one that you hold in your hand — because my car still has a CD player and I prefer to listen to music that way.

Now, I haven’t really bought a CD in years — usually I’ll download it to my computer from iTunes and then burn the CD from there (which is why I’m holding onto my old Mac Book — because it has a CD drive).

Anyway, I went into a Best Buy to find it, and unbeknownst to me, the store has downsized its music department! I remember the days of rushing to Best Buy to grab the new Dixie Chicks CD or, going back further, the new Hi-Five tape. I actually had to ask a man in a blue Best Buy T-shirt where the frickin’ music was.

My big dilemma was between Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus — and I chose Taylor, because my brother said he’d let me use his Spotify password to stream music. So Miley could wait.

I promptly put it in and listened to it. (Note: Opening a CD has not gotten any easier, for those wondering.)

And here are my thoughts …

I feel like she’s pissed and binging on techno bass. I like the two songs that have been released — “Ready for It?” and “Look What You Made Me Do” — but most of the others all sound the same. Perhaps I need to listen to them more and digest them, but that’s just an initial criticism.

Also, sadly, there is but one — ONE — ballad on the entire 15-song album, and that comes all the way at the end with “New Year’s Day.” Love the song, but I want more of those! Throw out the damn swish sounds and thumping bass and just sit yourself down at the piano. Please.

Remember “All Too Well”? I do, and I want another song like that. My inner teenage drama queen needs a good cry.

And now for the positive. I like the second song, “End Game,” because it has Ed Sheeran and rapper Future in it. Also, she mentions drinking whiskey on ice in one song, and drinking Old Fashioneds in another. So I’m thinking Ms. Swift prefers bourbon, and I like that.

My other favorite song is “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” because it’s fun, catchy and speaks of that one friend we all have who ruins things — furniture, electronics, relationships, a good mood.
