Today’s Reason To Drink

screen-shot-2016-11-14-at-4-36-56-pmI often return to this poem when life has me down or throws a curve ball. It says so much about my own shortcomings and coping mechanisms, but somehow I find solace in her wise words. Enjoy.

One Art
by Elizabeth Bishop

The art of losing isn’t hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster,

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother’s watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn’t a disaster.

Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan’t have lied. It’s evident
the art of losing’s not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

My baby's first photo.

My baby’s first photo.

I was fortunate to be at the new Jeptha Creed Distillery this morning for their opening reception and ribbon cutting ceremony. Very cool distillery that’ll soon have some bourbon — but in the meantime, they were making excellent Bloody Marys and Bellinis with their vodka and moonshine products.

In fact, after the ribbon cutting, they opened the doors to the Visitor’s Center, and I was the first one at the bar (shocker).

Read more about the experience here. Or, better yet, go check it out for yourself. It’s just a quick drive to Shelbyville, one exit past the Simpsonville Outlet Mall on I-64.

Ice Cream + Beer

Ice Cream + Beer

Sometimes an email will stop me in my tracks.

Usually it’s from someone breaking up with me or the government saying I owe money, but this time, it was neither of those, thank the lort! This time, it was from those mischievous folks over at Flanagan’s Ale House who like to tempt me with their Thursday pint night specials.

And after reading the name of this beer, who wouldn’t stop in their tracks?

At 7 p.m., we will be serving New Belgium Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ale. Their newest collaboration with Ben & Jerry’s brings together two different types of pint-makers for one common goal: to fill your glass with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ale. To craft this confection, they dove into their favorite chocolate chip cookie recipes for inspiration, and then whipped hefty doses of chocolate, brown sugar and vanilla into a dough-hued blonde ale base. The result is a full-bodied beer that seduces with a perfect balance of vanilla and chocolate, and finishes with just the right amount of sweetness. Put down the spoon, pick up a pint. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream beer. 6% abv

As a woman who loves both beer and ice cream, you can bet your sweet ass I’ll be making a pit stop at Flanagan’s later tonight, after I check out the Louisville Mashed bourbon event.

Hmm … bourbon, beer and ice cream … is there anything better (besides sex)?

Today’s Reason To Drink

tapeCould there be a better reason to drink than the news we woke up to this morning?

Sad, devastated, depressed, ashamed, afraid, disgusted, hopeless … all these are swirling around the dark cloud hanging above my head.

My vote doesn’t count. My state is red, my country is ignorant.

It’s not even Trump I fear. It’s his soulless running partner who single-handedly set the state of Indiana back years with his hatred for LGBTQ people. It’s the potential nominations to the Supreme Court. It’s the confirmation to the country that says it’s OK for a privileged white man to openly discriminate against people who don’t look like him or share his beliefs.

It’s a sad, sad day for America.

Bourbon.

I'll be bar hopping with this little lady tonight. I've been rubbing her head all morning for good luck.

I’ll be bar hopping with this little lady tonight. I’ve been rubbing her head all morning for good luck.

It was quite touching this morning to have the opportunity to vote for the first female president — if you don’t count Eleanor Roosevelt. I’ve been a fan of the Clintons since Bill blew his sax.

Once these are gone, they're gone forever.

Once these are gone, they’re gone forever.

There are a handful of bars and restaurants in town that select their own barrel of bourbon to sell strictly at their establishments. It gives their patrons an opportunity to try a one-of-a-kind bourbon that was hand picked by the staff. And once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.

21c Museum Hotel has a selection of their own Proof on Main-selected bourbons and other spirits, but what’s different about them is you can not only have a drink of what you like, you can then buy the bottle from the gift shop and take it home.

(Haymarket Whiskey Bar also sometimes sells their private selections, because they have a package license permit.)

Anyway, Proof’s very cool beverage director Chea Beckley invited me over to sample some of their latest selections, and all were quite tasty. I ended up buying a bottle of the Buffalo Trace, which is the only way you can purchase that bourbon as a single barrel.

Today’s Reason To Drink

cubs-x650xThat was quite a game last night, and I must say: Congratulations, Cubs! I’m not usually a watcher of baseball unless I’m there in the stands with a beer and a hot dog, but I ate a big blob of sugar (aka Reece’s Cup) last night before I went to bed, and could not get my heart to stop racing.

So I decided to stay up and watch the game. If every baseball game was that intense, I’d be a fan!

I grew up a Reds fan, so there’s that. But who knew once you take a pitcher out, you can’t put him back in?

Learn something new every sleepless night.
