Today’s Reason To Drink

tornadoWell, last night I dreamt about a tornado that was shooting rockets through houses … which I’d take any night over the previous night’s dreams. Bring on the winds of change.

In other news, I found my W.L. Weller 12-Year at Doc Crow’s last night, but it was $18 a shot. Still cheaper at Feast BBQ for $12. Hoping to find it cheaper than that. The search will continue …

NightmaresWhat do dreams really mean? Are they a reflection of your fears and worries? Should they be taken seriously? How can a dream seem so real — so real it sets you back three months in your recovery? Is there a pill that will silence them?

I’m trying to outrun my ghosts, but they always catch up to me when I’m sleeping.

IMG_1275Tonight the Back Door celebrates 30 years! I talked to owner John Dant about the bar business in a piece for Insider. I will definitely be in attendance and help celebrate the bar I consider home on Thursday happy hours ever since moving here in 1999.

The Unstable Table welcomed me with open arms and still meets up today. I’ve gotten to know the wonderful staff and regulars throughout the years — and they’ve seen me at my best and my worst.

Thank you, Back Door, for giving me a soft place to fall after a long workweek. And after some $1.30 Fireballs tonight, I might, indeed, be falling.

Woodford Reserve releases new rye whiskey

WoodfordRyeHere’s a link to my story for Insider Louisville on the new Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, which will be released next month.

I got to taste the rye back in November or December when I visited the distillery in Versailles, Ky. It was spicy, robust and flavorful, indeed. It’s the kind of drink you sip on after a hard day’s work … or if you’re catching up with friends on a Saturday afternoon and it’s snowing outside and you’re preparing for a mean game of Cards Against Humanity.

Why ask why — try Woodford Rye.

(Brown-Forman, you can use that if you’d like. I’ll just take a bottle for my services.)

Jenny Lewis is my jam.

Jenny Lewis is my jam.

Forgive me for not posting first thing in the morning. I’ve gotten out of routine.

Just heard about two amazing concerts coming to town this spring/summer — Ryan Adams/Jenny Lewis (April 30, Iroquois Amphitheater) and NKOTB with TLC and Nelly (June 7, Yum! Center). I’d like to go to both if the stars align.

IMG_1294I tried this W.L. Weller 12-Year for the first time last week and haven’t been able to get it off my mind. It’s the smoothest 90-proof bourbon I’ve had this side of the Mississippi … not that I’ve had a smoother bourbon on the other side … I just wanted to add emphasis for emphasis’ sake.

I enjoyed it straight up, for it needed no mixer or rocks. It was $12 at Feast BBQ in NuLu … if you can find it cheaper, let me know! The regular W.L. Weller is available at The Post for $4.50. I don’t know much about the regular vs. the 12-year, but it sounded like a good price.

Try it before I drink it all.

BTW: It’s rumored to have a similar recipe to Pappy … so there you go.

Yum and carb-loaded!

I love pizza. I love bars. I love new. So I was thrilled to stop by the new Germantown pizzeria called The Post last night. The pizza, which you can get by the slice, is New York-style, meaning thin, cracker-crisp crust and lots of cheese. I had the slice of the day, which was cheddar, bacon and jalepeno, and it was absolutely delicious — and not just because I’ve been carb starving myself for two weeks now.

The interior is fresh, inviting, clean and spacious. I sat at the bar with my friend Steph, and we made fast friends with the bartenders (naturally) and even the people sitting next to us. I think I may have even been one of those over-sharers last night with a new friend — sorry about that, Stephanie, and thanks for the advice!

The full bar is priced reasonably, with all craft beer selections on draft at a reasonable $5 (except for Coors heavy, which is $2). Since I was counting calories, I couldn’t enjoy a Bell’s or Angry Orchard, so I stuck with the tried-and-true Miller Lite, which is served in cans only. All domestics are in cans, and this is my only gripe. I don’t mind paying $3 for a bottle of Miller Lite/Bud Light/other American swill, but I do prefer it in a bottle. If I’m drinking from a can, I expect to pay a little less — like $2.50. But that’s just me, and I can easily get over it with a few more drinks.

IMG_1287Also, there’s a happy  hour from 4-6 p.m. and midnight-2 a.m. where all domestics are $2. I like that.

So next time you’re craving pizza and are near the Germantown neighborhood, stop by The Post. It’s right next door to Four Pegs on Goss Avenue.
